From office to home: Keurig’s Breakthrough

Before single-serve coffee became a household ritual, Keurig was finding success in offices and corporate settings. Over a decade ago, they partnered with Motiv to help bring that experience home—developing their first commercially successful consumer pod brewing system and introducing a whole new way for people to make (and think about) coffee.

The iconic insert, close, brew moment.

In the beginning, Motiv worked with Keurig to translate their commercial machines into a simplified, consumer-ready experience—reducing complexity while preserving performance. Central to that effort was the design of a manual puncture mechanism, creating the now-iconic interaction that defines pod-based brewing: insert, close, brew. This “handshake” with the product became an ownable, intuitive moment—one that helped introduce consumers to single-serve coffee at the touch of a button, where everyone in the household could choose their own roast or flavor.

Scaling simplicity: A decade of Keurig innovation

Over the next ten years, we partnered with Keurig to develop an expanding lineup of brewers and variants—adapting to new pod technologies while staying focused on speed, simplicity, and a consistently great cup. Along the way, we helped establish an evolving and recognizable visual language for the brand, and supported the full ecosystem around the product—from packaging and in-box materials to merchandising systems and trade show experiences—ensuring every touchpoint reinforced the clarity and convenience that made Keurig a category leader.
